Nuchal Translucency (NT) Ultrasound

The nuchal translucency is a fluid-filled area in the back of the fetus’ neck that is naturally present early in pregnancy.  The NT ultrasound takes a measurement of this fluid-filled space. This measurement is very small and fetuses with a chromosome abnormality such as Down syndrome will often have greater than average NT measurements. The NT ultrasound can be done between 11 weeks 2 days and 14 weeks 2 days of pregnancy. NT ultrasound is a specialized ultrasound that is performed in our office.

Our doctors and sonographers have received special training to perform this test and utilize high resolution ultrasound machines. In addition, SFPA participates in an on-going NT quality control program sponsored by the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
